After the water and other volatile components containing gold and other valuable metals leave the source rock, they become mixed with ground water that is already present in the surrounding rocks. The resulting hot mixture, called a hydrothermal solution, continues its journey upward and may eventually form a hot spring if it actually reaches the surface. Mainly, it travels along cracks, fissures, and faults, seeking out low pressure zones.
Through detailed geologic mapping of the sort that is not generally done, we are able to discover these solution pathways and precisely locate those that most of the solutions have followed.
To do this we must understand the stress and strain pattern of the Earth at the location and at the time where all of the action takes place. Also, no one can decipher the pattern of the faults and fractures without a clear understanding of the stratigraphy of the sedimentary layers.
Using stratigraphy that incorporates both the recognizable rock types and the ages of the fossils in the rocks in a more detailed way than is usually done, we can find the important faults and fractures that may be hidden from others and can find those places along them that are more likely to be low pressure zones where the hydrothermal solutions have traveled.
It is this work, starting from the regional geology and working into the local outcrop scale, that we believe allows us to precisely target potential ore deposits. We do not pick up a rock at random and ask I wonder what this mean?
We will drill far fewer holes when we test a prospect because we already know what we are looking for. We already know what the rock means when we pick it up.
